CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
The storm was still raging the next morning. Caleb appeared at her door once more with coffee and muffins. They enjoyed an easy breakfast together and then decided on a board game to pass the time.
âItâs been a while since I played Monopoly,â Stella admitted as they set up the board. âHow much longer do you think the storm is going to last?â
âThe weather report said things should start calming down tomorrow.â
She nodded and turned her focus to the game. They chatted amiably while they played. Caleb ended up winning but Stella had fun. It was nice to have company while the storm howled outside. It was also nice to have someone who was willing to go outside and get more firewood, so she didnât have to get cold and wet. Though she did feel slightly guilty about that.
For lunch, Caleb found a pot with a long handle in one of the cabinets. Stella got some leftover stew from the freezer and he was able to hold the pot over the fire to thaw and warm it up enough for them to eat.
âMy goodness,â Stella said. âI guess I should take notes on how to survive storms around here.â
They both laughed and then finished their stew. Stella rinsed the dishes and left them in the sink. When she turned around, she saw that Caleb was pulling out his laptop.
âDo you mind if I write for a little bit?â he asked. âEven though itâs storming, I still have a deadline to meet.â
âGo right ahead. I can entertain myself for a little while. Um, would you like to use one of the bedrooms?â
He shook his head as he set up his laptop and notebooks on the kitchen table. âIâm good here. That is, if you donât mind?â
âI donât mind at all. Do you have enough battery?â
âI have an extra one.â
âOh, okay.â She found her tablet and checked the battery, grateful to find that it was at sixty percent. âIâll just read.â
She settled on the sofa with her tablet and Boomer, who jumped up to lie beside her with his head on her leg. She stroked his head as she began to read and Caleb began to type. To her surprise, the steady sound of the clicking keys was quite soothing.
Every once in a while, Caleb would mutter under his breath and she would just smile to herself. Sheâd never been in the presence of a real writer at work before. Just wait until she told Noah that she was sitting feet away while C.J. Abrahams wrote his latest book.
Caleb sighed loudly and sat back and stretched in his chair. âWhat are you smiling about over there?â he asked.
âOh, nothing. Just thinking about what my son will say when I tell him I got to see you hard at work on your latest book.â
âNot as glamorous as you envisioned, huh?â
âI donât know. Itâs pretty much what I expected, except I did picture you drinking a glass of whisky or something while you write.
